headquarters of the Red Cross—partly to defray costs of the blood collection service—so the local officials have barely $14,000 to meet the rent, utilities and other operating expenses.
Although the Red Cross is most often associated with its blood collecting activity, it performs other important services for area residents. Last year, for example, the Red Cross chapter supplied food and furnishings to eight families who were victims of fires and floods, furnished 34 volunteers to assist at two nursing homes in Warrenton and at Fauquier Hospital, the Vint Hill Farms Statiop dispensary and at the Bloodmobile; helped 150 military families in the area in applying for government benefits and in verifying the need for emergency leave; trained 48 people in standard first aid. 67 in advanced first aid, and 36 in cardiac pulmonary resuscitation, as well as 207 in water safety and swimming.
Rec Cross officials make the point that few people realize the extent of the chapter’s training programs. Most of the rescue squads in the area, the fireman and the police have been instructed in CPR and first aid by the Red Cross. The same is true of swimming instruction in the schools.
All of this is in addition to the collection of blood, for which the Fauquier Chapter last year won a certificate of merit from national headquarters for exceeding its goal. The chapter had the best record in the entire 37county Washington Region.
