Space needs, he agreed, are the result of requirements for academic subjects. “Yes, I’m satisfied with the efficiency of the present space,” Miller said. He pointed out that if his proposal is endorsed and two labs, clerk-typist room, two offices, and storage space is added at the high school, “space will still have to be used efficiently."
“You’re not leaving much room for margin." Reeve said.
“I don't intend to." replied Miller.
Responding to a suggestion from other board members that the architect selected for the expansion project be asked to evaluate use of existing space. Eastham said "if there’s one thing certain about architects, it's that they want to build." He maintained that, asking an architect if present space is adequate would be like asking a cat if he wanted to eat canaries. “They would go broke into the poor house if they didn’t say you need to build!"
Lane countered that an architect should be able to suggest better use of existing space along with a proposal for expansion.
