For local followers of drama, fine films, live music and dance, the coming year is a critical one, according to Freeman Allan, manager of Mountain Magic Cinema & Theater.
Located in Rappahannock’s Washington (within an easy 25 minute drive of Warrenton, Luray, Front Royal and northern Madison and Culpeper counties), the theater was reopened last year after 15 years of disuse, and has already attracted sizable audiences.
“We have just one year more to determine how large and enthusiastic the support for fine local entertainment really is,” explained Allan. “The economics of theater operation require that the building be used regularly and be well attended.”
“During our winter shutdown we have renovated the theater and planned a full and exciting 1981 calendar.” Allan continued. "Now it’s up to the audience. If attendance increases, we stay open. If not, the theater will close down by next February. It will probably be gutted and converted to office space.”
