As for the shop area, he maintained that the industrial arts program doesn't encompass ail that it should because of space limitations and suggested that an expansion program be undertaken before construction costs climb even higher.
From Room To Room
Judy Bomberger told the board that she teaches two morning music classes at the high school and has a ten minute break before driving to the elementary school where she must push a cart loaded with instruments, record player, records and the rest of her supplies from room to room for the remainder of the day.
“The school has a good piano but it's of little use because it takes too long and too many people to move it,” she said. If she needs to use a blackboard, Bomberger said, she must first check to see that she doesn’t erase anything still needed by the regular classroom teacher.
Every half hour, she must move her supplies from room to room, often forced to cut minutes off the first group's time in order to get to another class at the other end of the building.
Practice for the elementary school’s musical programs used to be conducted on the gymnasium stage, she said. But now that stage is divided between a teachers lounge, offices for three teachers, desk storage and class space for the gifted and talented program, leaving no place for rehearsals.
"I teach 600 students at the elementary school every week. The physical education teacher is the only one who teaches as many and she has the gym...I’m already doing the job of one and a half people when I have two schools. Please make it easier by providing a music room to teach in." Bomberger told the board.
Describing students in the gifted and talented program as the best in the elementary school, fifth grade teacher Robin Dexter called the environment on the gym stage ‘‘one of the worst conditions at the school...I find it ironic that the school board gives the inference that the best deserve the worst," she said.
Dexter, who also teaches band classes after school, said that music teaches creativity and discipline as well as providing an outlet for self-expression and stressed the need for a music
