Charles “Chick" Owens' Cultivating, winner last week in the owner-rider hurdle series, was again the best, as the young Maryland attorney guided his Herbager gelding to a wire-to-wire victory over Jay Barr's Pill Mill. Ballyannon lost rider Max Lammers halfway through when his tack slipped.
The first of 12 races was the three-quarter mile flat race, which was split. Mrs. J. W. Schmid's big gray Bed Pal. with Don Yovanovich riding, led all the way. Redoubtable was close up until the turn into the stretch when Timbuktu. Bernie Houghton up. and Storm Petrel, ridden by Kathee Rengert. accelerated to hit the wire second and third.
In the second division a local entry. Spanish Harbor, owned by Mrs. Suzanne B. Childs and ridden by Jennifer Youngman. was the victor over Dr. and Mrs. William Wright's Double Recipe, Bernie Houghton riding. Third was the pacesetter City Vant. ridden by Charles Fenwick, followed by Reuel Warriner’s Yellow Boy, with show rider Mike Elmore up.
