News of March 9, 1950,
one front page item concerned the unusual pets owned by Mr. V. H. Keeler of Washington. Under the headline: “Owns Unusual Animals” it was reported that Mr. Keeler was the owner of two hamsters: The little animals have mouse-like heads, stubby tails, and play like squirrels in their cages. If a piece of food is offered which they do not like, they retreat immediately to a corner of the cage and wash themselves very much as a cat would do. They bury food for future reference in the manner of a dog.
“Mr. Keeler didn’t say what hours were most suitable for inspection, but as soon as possible most of us with good health curiosity are going to see those things.”
In other front-page news, then state trooper Buntin made a quick arrest: “A Ford pick-up, property of James W. Fletcher of Sperryville, was recovered by Trooper William A. Buntin at 5 o’clock Wednesday morning near the Merrill residence in Washington. The driver of the truck gave his name as Lanny Lavin Brown of Fort Wayne State School, Indiana. It is suspected that this same Brown, who was caught driving the Fletcher pick-up, may be the one who wrecked a Chevrolet truck, belonging to H. B. Wood of Woodville around 3 o’clock in the morning Wednesday. The Wood truck was crashed head-on into the side of a culvert near the home of Miss Annie . Stephenson of Woodville. Brown was apprehended through a series of suspicious actions which led local people to report the behavior of the stranger to Buntin.
In the inside pages was an item about a canasta party: “Mrs. E. M. Jones entertained at a canasta party at her home Friday evening for her daughter, Becky Jones. Others playing were Elizabeth Verner, George H. Davis, ^III, Evelyn Tyler Miller and Carolyn Gates Turner.”
