Despite strong and frigid north winds, almost 6,000 racing enthusiasts turned out for the Rappahannock Hunt's point-to-point Saturday at Thornton Hill Farm near Sperryville, where they saw Randolph Rouse e«tsi|y win the Ben Venue ^fcwr-ridtr timber race on Cinzano.
It was his 50th victory in the Seven Corners series, which began with the 1%I running of the Ben Venue.
Rouse, whose Cinzano had won the Casanova Cup last -week. kept the fleet Uruguayan import behind Max Lammers' Garden Games for the first turn of the 2'/j mile course.
Then after they leaped the line fence coming down the mountain. Rouse let him take the lead, and there they stayed until the finish, coming in 25 lengths to the good of Roy Graham's Boca Bird, last year's- winner of this race and the series.
Another 15 lengths back was David Moyes' Helix, while Garden Games lost his rider midway through the race.
The ladies race was a spirited duel between the two leading riders, Patti Cassel, last year's winner, and Shelley O'Higgins, winner ot the 1980 series. Susan Sutula on her Too Far Gone led the way the first lap. with the four horses closely bunched.
