Spring Comes

March 20th

Twice each year, day and night are exactly the same length of time—on the first day of spring and autumn. This year, on March 20 at 12:03 p.m., spring arrives when the sun moves directly above Earth’s equator. This moment is called the vernal equinox, from the Latin words, “vernal” meaning spring and “equinox” meaning equal night.

On the first day of spring, the sun will rise directly in the east and set directly in the west.

The sun’s annual journey across the sky can be traced from the Tropic of Capricorn to the Tropic of Cancer. When the sun reaches the equator, the midpoint in its journey, spring officially begins in the northern hemisphere.

According to Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger Jr., director of the Science Museum of Virginia, “Because Earth is tilted about 23‘/i degrees on its axis as it revolves around the sun. the northern hemisphere gets more heat for part of the year and the southern hemisphere for the other part.”
