With Baldwin abstaining, the supervisors voted unanimously in favor of the tower being located on the east end of the jail lot. “1 think we should still talk it over with the townspeople,” supervisor H. B. Wood added.

After the vote, emergency services volunteers Carl James and Frankie Huff stopped at the zoning administrator’s office and learned that a special use permit is required from the Washington Town Council before the communications tower can be erected. They reported that plans are to proceed immediately with the permit application so the antenna can be p" "before cold weather hits.

Not To Print

After several months of discussion, the supervisors agreed on Monday that the cost of publishing a list of the county’s delinquent taxpayers outweighed any potential gain. Clerk Diane Bruce noted that unpaid real estate taxes totaled 514,992 for one year. The list of those who haven't paid would have to be printed in the paper as it stood on July 1 even though some individuals have remitted delinquent taxes since that date, she said.

“It seems like an awful lot of money to pay,” said Gilkey of the $347 for a half-page listing or $652 for a full page. "And some of the people who’ve already paid would still have their names in there."

“Actually, 1 don’t think it would be worth it.” agreed Wood. He suggested instead that the supervisors direct commonwealth’s attorney Douglas Baumgardner to take legal action against county property owners who are three years or more in arrears as provided for in state law.

Dae Value Extended

After a short public hearing, the supervisors voted unanimously to extend the county’s use value taxation program. This time, rather than set the same one year limit which raised the question on whether use value could be extended into the current tax year, the board made the preferential land assessment program effective in perpetuity or until rescinded by ordinance.

“This has proven to be a very fair tax," commented Wood. “I think that most people will agree that it’s a very fair tax."
