hunting, point to point racing, even some polo playing were by definition and tradition the sports and games of gentlemen, if not of kings, and the participants were properly dressed, they were not necessarily gentlemen, of the quality of those engaged in similar activities, say in Warrenton, Upperville, or Middleburg. To name a few places that might be recognized by what is called the “horsey set" in Minnesota who ride to hounds but not to the fox. Rather they follow a drag across well trimmed field, over custom-made fences, walls, and hurdles. Real foxes, in any case, are hard to find in Minnesota, and if found are not to be hunted or chased — not on horses, not on motor cycles, or in snowmobiles.
To further distinguish Rappahannock County riders from those of other parts of Virginia I pointed out that for a variety of reasons — roughness of terrain, boldness of riders, frequency of ground-hog holes, and other things many gentlemen and ladyriders from other Virginia hunts were hesitant to ride with the Rappahannock riders.
The case w as not allowed to lie at rest. 1 was challenged to explain who if not gentlemen lived in Rappahannock County. 1 acknowledged that there were one or two gentlemen in the county and another two or three marginal ones, whose names,, 1 refused to give out, and went on to explain that the men of my acquaintance in the county were country lawyers, well diggers, preachers, horse trainers and traders, orchard men, cattle breeders and horse breeders, wood cutte's. timber men. a game warden, at least three country store owners, an auctioneer, two filling station operators. the keeper of the hounds, a real-estate man who encouraged people to eat rutabagas. a county supervisor, one or two persons suspected of being moonshiners and bootleggers, poachers, a coon hound trainer and hunter, and one suspected of keeping fighting chickens and a few scattered United Airlines pilots.
Finally sensing that my list was not impressing my critics, I threw in the names of several retired newspaper and television persons, and the name of Jack Kilpatrick, hoping 'hat I might be saved by that conservative association.
It was all to no avail but the integrity of Rappahannock County survived unscathed.
