curriculum. It is in these counties that a three-leafed closer was first used, in pins and pennants for the participating youth. Each leaf had an H and the familiar phrase, “head, heart and hands.”
During the war years, the 4-H clubs took the forefront in teaching youngsters skills that would help them cope with food shortages. A fourleaf clover with H’s standing for Head, Heart. Hands and Health replaced the threeleaf emblem and “4-H Club" came into common usage. The first national 4-H congress was held in 1922 and the first national 4-H club camp in 1927.
From these very practical beginnings. 4-H became an international organization after the second world war. and has continued to expand with additional Department of Agriculture funding and additions of science and public interest work in its projects. But the ideas of its founders remain the same: to bring to rural youth a realization that the key to their success in agriculture is training; and to foster a feeling of pride and accomplishment in rural life.
