Like the maze, the front rooms of the burning building were pitch black, filled with a smoke blanket heavier and thicker than any Rappahannock fog. With sight non-existent and the fire fighters separated by lengths of hose, the only way of telling whether the team was still in tact was by having the assigned numbers shquted out in turn.
