Rappahannock volunteers joined Fire fighters from surrounding counties at the Amissville fire hall grounds over the past two weekends for four grueling days of testing at the annual fire school.
These were no ordinary tests. Final exams came in darkness in the narrow tunnels of the maze, a claustrophobic's nightmare, and in the black, smoke Filled rooms of a burning building where super-heated steam slipped under protective coats to unleash rivers of sweat.
1 was unprepared for a lesson in the realities of a fire Fighter’s job. I stopped by the Fire school’s second Saturday session, expecting to grab a few shots of photogenic Firemen and firewomen all decked out in their gear. 1 left with renewed admiration and respect for the volunteers who protect our lives and homes from Fire’s destruction.
