"4-H Pathways to the Future" is the theme for activities of nearly five million 4-H members who are observing National 4-H Week, Oct. 3-9.
During the week, members of America's largest outof-school youth educational organizational and their 568,000 volunteer leaders will celebrate with activities aimed at promoting individual growth and accomplishment, creativity, social responsibility and family involvement.
4-H members, nine of 19 who reside in every county of the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, will emphasize their work in a variety of project areas, including livestock, plants and soils, leisure education, economics, jobs and careers, health and personal development, home economics, communications, energy, ecology and natural resources and community development.
The theme challenges 4-H'ers to become self-directing, productive arid contributing members of society. Through practical hands-on learning experiences, members select and follow pathways that lead to success in personal and career development. 4-H pathways lead young people and their volunteer leaders to increased understanding, appreciation and service to people of the community, nation and the world. 4-H is the youth program of the Cooperative Extension Service of the State Land-Grant Universities and the U S. Department of Agriculture. Programs similar to 4-H also involve nearly 4.5 million youth in approximately 80 countries around the world.
