Tee-shirts proclaiming “I Survived The Maze” were the first clue that there was much more to the fire school than the classroom sessions going on in the fire hall. The trail of tee-shirts led to a long white trailer parked at the edge of the highway. The hillside at the rear entrance was dotted with piles of air masks, tanks, boots, coats and sprawling fire fighters — men, women and teenagers — waiting their turn to go through.
The trailer holds 178 feet of challenge. Its purpose is similar to the rites of passage that faced Indian boys at the door of manhood.
