no trace ot the rain that had been forecast. Our destinations for this first Civil War Battlefields Tour of 1982-83 were Harpers Ferry and Antietam.
As our bus rumbled through the busy streets of Charles Town, W. Va., Mr. Lynn, our driver and guide, pointed out the spot where John Brown was tried and hanged from the gallows. In a very short time we were walking the cobbled streets of old Harpers Ferry, made famous by this same John Brown. Our first stop on the Harpers Ferry tour was the site of the Arsenal, the object of John Brown's raid. Next we visited the small engine house where Brown and his followers holed up with their hostages until overcome by U.S. Marines under the command of Col. Robert E. Lee and Jeb Stuart.
After taking in the magnificent view of the meeting of the rivers, we crowded into a small theatre to see the orientation film provided by the Park Service. The film, a summary of this historic town's story from its founding, focuses on the exciting events of 1859 which electrified the nation. After the film, we were free to climb the stone stairs to Jefferson's Rock or to visit the Wax Museum. Some of
