Huff asked one of the boys why he left the building.
"I thought I was going to pass out but when I came back in. 1 was all right.” the junior fireman replied. “It’s a whole new world in there, a whole new world. You’ll find a tendency at first to hvpervenilate. You have to concentrate on your breathing. Take it easy and listen, listen to what’s going on.” Huff responded. “There’s such a thing as getting too much. At the first twinge, be man — or woman — enough to come out. The fire department needs lots of good, dedicated people. You can handle the ladders or pull hoses. You don’t all have to be fire fighters.”
After an afternoon of tagging along behind the students at the Amissville fire school, it's obvious that it takes more than just interest in community service to be a fire fighter. As Frankie Huff said, it’s not for everyone. And the rest of us can thank the men, women and young people who make up the ranks of Rappahannock’s volunteers.
