"We’re desperately in need of something right now,” sheriff W. A. Buntin told the Rappahannock supervisors on Monday, elaborating on his far reaching efforts over the past few weeks to find jail space for county prisoners.
Buntin reported that after calling five different localities, he finally found a spot for two local prisoners in the Culpeper jail. “They said they would take them until today (Monday). Then I don’t know what we'll do with them,” the sheriff said, adding that jails in a SO mile radius are all overcrowded.
Buntin has been forced to scramble for space since Fauquier sheriff Luther Cox announced in March that overcrowded conditions prevented him from accepting Rappahannock inmates. In response, the board of supervisors here agreed to upgrade county facilities, now suitable only for 24-hour lock-up under Department of Corrections standards.
