Sen. Scott thus became the first Republican to serve in the U.S. senate from Virginia since the resurgent post-Civi! War Democratic General Assembly gave Republican-Readjuster Sen. Billy Mahone a rather unceremonious boot in 1886.
Sen. Scott retired in 1978, and was succeeded by Republican Sen. John W. Warner, the present incumbent.

After the death of Sen. Daniel in 1910. Gov. William Hodges Mann appointed former Gov. Claude A. Swanson to the post. Sen. Swanson served until 1932. when he was named Secretary of the Navy by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
