Howard LaBove as anything more than a 6-foot 4-inch. 220 pound prankster and comedian and perhaps the biggest womanizer in all of Middleburg. Surely there was another side of Mr. LaBove. After all, when confronted by a blazing .45 in his own bedroom, his first actions were to push Ms. Dana out of the bullet’s path and yell to her to run for her life. In contrast to the Shakespeare quoted by the defense, Mr. Mechling’s closing arguments could barely be heard from the back of the small courtroom. His assistant, Mr. Souter, read his closing remarks in a quiet voice from a podium while he flipped through his legal pad. He told the jury that Gregory may not have formed an intention to kill until aroused by the sounds of his estranged wife’s lovemaking. Remarkable.
From the way the case was presented to them, I can sympathize with the jury’s feelings that it was an unfortunate accident in which everyone had suffered. And 1 have to agree with the jury foremen's comment that a prison sentence for Mr. Gregory won’t bring Mr. LaBove back to life. But on that reasoning, we’d have to allow Sirhan Sirhan or the West Virginia parents who recently spanked their young child to death to continue to walk the streets along with the rest of us.
And a $1,000 fine won’t bring Howard LaBove back either. It wouldn’t even cover his burial expenses or the cost of Mo Dana's 300 stitches. Perhaps we should be content to just forget the whole thing, pat Ted on the shoulder, and wish him a happier summer next year.
