Children who have been abused find friends in the VWP volunteers and the program’s director. “Before the case ever comes to trial, we take the children into an empty courtroom so they can become familiar with the surroundings,” Wodell explained. “We play games with them. We do role acting. We let them sit on the judge’s bench, in the jury box and at the defense table. We make sure they know where the defendant’s going to be sitting during the.trial. We arrange for them to talk to the prosecutors. Children are frightened of that strange figure dressed all in black—a judge can be a terrifying sight for a youngster. We make sure they see those black robes before they go to court.”
Sometimes the kids are so well prepared for their court appearance that they feel cheated if they don’t get to take the witness stand, according to Wodell. When a case is settled out of court through a plea bargain, I’ve had children wail ‘But you promised! ’ ” Irene reported, shaking her head and smiling.
