To the editor In reply to your edittorial. Cheap Thrills, I have been disturbed by your contest and more so by the stories printed as a result. There has been a saturation of Halloween talk on all of the TV news and one may wonder why there is so much interest and talk about this subject. It is not just concern about poisoned food. There has been a sweeping of satanic activity over our United States for many years and it is becoming more and more pronounced and aimed at our children. Witches, demons, elves, fairies and such have been portrayed as cute, good, mischievous, just a lot of fun. While in reality they exist and are not figments of our imagination, they are not something to be played with. In many foreign countries the people there know that demonic activity is real, harmful and evil. In the United States it is swept under the rug as something we are too sophisticated to be fooled by. This is pure ignorance.
Most people know the history of the celebration of Halloween from the Druids, their practice of human sacrifice and demanding gifts from households to ward off evil from demons during the following year. When Christians embraced this custom they changed the name to All Saints’ Day and the night before became All Hallows Eve. One can see the relationship of sending little children, dressed as witches, ghosts, etc. out to get treats or there will be tricks the next day.
