China has been little visited by Americans since before World War II. so that once beyond the coastal cities we find ourselves the objects of intensely open curiosity. Villagers simply stop in groups to quietly look at us. It is for us to see the world front the vantage point of the gorilla in the zoo.
China does not know much of Americans, much less western ways of living. The people of these two remote cultures have been divided since the courageous young thousands of Chennault and Stilwell, from Oklahoma and Virginia, sailed home at the end of World War II.
