Victim Compensation
Whenever she answers an emergency call, Wodell takes along a victim compensation form. In 1977, Virginia's General Assembly established this special compensation program for victims of crime. “Defendants— if they're convicted—pay into it. There’s no tax money involved,” Wodell noted, adding that up to $20,000 per victim may be awarded with $1,000 available in advance in emergency cases. She assists victims in filling out the form and then sends it off to Richmond for evaluation.
Wodell has also devised a victim’s impact statement which is submitted to Loudoun’s judges along with the standard pre-sentence report on the defendant. “We want to make certain that the courts are aware of the suffering and emotional impact that crime has on its victims.
