Despite opposition from nearby landowners, farm managers and other road users, the Rappahannock supervisors voted unanimously at Monday’s board meeting to abandon a portion of Route 629.
Formerly a part of Route 211 until the new double-lane highway was constructed, the .7 mile spur advertised for abanoonment connects with the dual highway at both ends. As the result of the supervisors’ vote, only .37 miles, including the road’s east intersection with Route 211, will be taken out of the state system.
Marion Kuhn, who owns property along Route 629, presented the board with a petition opposing abandonment signed by more than 90 persons. “We all need it (the road). It is used constantly," said Kuhn. She told the supervisors that she can’t get to her farm fields at all without using Route 629. "I use this road for my farming operations—the entire road, not just part of it."
