Reconstruction is happening everywhere to rebuild from the wars and revolutions of half a century. But whether it is raising a steel girder or digging a trench for a massive new pipeline, it is done by the backs and hands of men and women, like those who built America’s rails across the West a century ago and were called “coolies.” It is in sharp contrast with America in the ’80’s, where the back has been replaced by the backhoe and bulldozer. I never saw a bulldozer at even the largest earth moving projects in China 1982, except in Peking.

What a paradox. Without home refrigerators and freezers, the Chinese family of necessity goes daily to market for its groceries. And yet in the barest home with only a hard bed, a small bureau and a chair, there is a television set. Today’s human common denominator, the TV set, is today said to be in some 20 percent of Chinese urban dwellings.

Our night train to Wuhan and Peking is stopped suddenly and blackened in the moonlight on a siding in the countryside. There is only darkened silence. Then, as in a spine chilling scene from Dr. Zhivago, there is a flash past my window of leading flags, engine and a few gleaming emerald cars roaring by in the direction of the 12th Communist Party Congress convening in Peking.
