Richard Nixon’s coming to China in 1972 did nothing for the transportation, hotels or privies which American stomachs and minds still retch over today, except in the better hostelries of Peking.
Hotels are Socialist austere, running water now and again. But then before I damn China for the wretched fragrances of its public restrooms, I am reminded of a crowded Scandinavian bus.
We travel always with two government guides, one who “coordinates” where we go. along with his other reported secret police duties, and another local guide changing at each city who does help explain this strange new Oriental world.
A long Chinese luncheon (we would call 12 separate dishes a “banquet”) is provided in Changsha just before we visited an elementary school. Too much red and green pepper is, of necessity, cooled with too much Chinese rice wine and beer, leading a friend to prophesy tomorrow's story in the China Daily News—"18 Distinguished Americans Stagger In On 200 Changsha Schoolchildren."

1 find a magic moment in that small primary school in Hunan Province, children learning Chinese history, English, and doing a Mary Poppins play for us; then they are out to vigorously disciplined calisthenics on a playground under a gigantic Red Star on the schoolhouse wall. Just a school.
