The revolutionary ongoing change in China, a colossal drama happening largely unseen by the outside world of our generation, has been the largest single revolution in world history whether measured by the number of people involved or the extent and speed of changes made - dwarfing on equal counts both the Russian and American revolutions.
Considering the thousandsof-years-deep roots of the Chinese people, it seems dubious to apply the Western style unilinear pattern of social change to conclude that the Communism is simply a phase of China's "modernization." Here is a rooted family culture which has lived through five major rebellions, five wars involving every other world power before World War I, then continuous war, and after that, eight years of Japanese invasion and then four years of civil war—no country in history has ever been such a doormat, has ever experienced so much so fast.
We think we have moved quickly in America from the horse and buggy and kerosene lantern to jets and television within a century. But we have not at the same time also junked our entire structure of government, our language and entire society as the Chinese have.
