To repay a little of that debt, Warner organized an informal fund drive to raise money for a fitting marker at their graves. He found that people hadn't forgotten George and "Bert” Noakes. Donations came rolling in — checks for $10, $15, $20, $25, $50 and $100 — $715 in all. With help from George Butler who manages Shiloh Baptist Church’s cemetery fund, arrangements were made to order the memorials and a special service was planned for this coming Sunday.
Old timers who remember Mr. and Mrs. Noakes and the younger generation that has heard the stories about this remarkable couple will host a special dinner in their honor after the morning devotionals.
