leaders, unit leaders and another step up — master teachers—spend increasing amounts of time developing curriculum and instructional materials and are paid accordingly. One unit leader from each grade helps the principal with budget and school policy recommendations. Teacher morale is good because open communication lines allow for plenty of teacher input, Cogar says.
Morale is nourished through various “family outings”, Cogar adds.
There’s always a Friday afternoon treat when the teachers leave: ice cream or some such token of gratitude and esteem. During in-service days the administration prepares and serves a lunch for the teachers. The formal Christmas dance is catered; the annual summer picnic is family style. Then there’s the annual Valentine party and dance, bus trips to the Manassas dinner-theater, jaunts to Culpeper for pizza and roller skating. Cogar thinks it’s important to offer lots of things socially for the faculty to do together.

If there is money left in the building maintenance fund at the end of October, the students benefit with parties, movies on the widescreen TV (the school belongs to a film rental club), field trips, concerts or other special activities. School officials previously spent approximately $1,000 per year cleaning up after the vandals, according to Cogar. Now $300 is budgeted to each grade for maintenance. The pupils patrol themselves and their friends to reap the rewards from preventing vandalism. Destroying or defacing school property or littering are simply considered unacceptable behavior.
