What makes teenagers tick? What motivates them? What are their dreams, their fears, their hopes, their aspirations?
Answers to some of those questions may come in the Rappahannock Players’ spring production "Where I’m Cornin’ From,” a "mostly original” musical centered around the writings. thoughts and feelings of young people from this area.
“The idea grew out of the musical “The Me Nobody Knows," a Broadway hit based on the writings of kids from New York’s inner city,” explained Pali Delevitt Allan, who, with her husband Freeman Allan, is writer/director for the production.
The major share of proceeds from the show will go towards funding Rappahannock’s 4-H summer cooperative day camp program. “We want to focus the attention of the community on the talents AND needs of our young people,” said Allan, explaining the connection between the two projects.
Last week, the Allans organized a discussion group for youngsters which they taped to use for material for the show. In addition to ideas from that type of free wheeling “rap session,” they plan to incorporate written responses to questions put to students at both the county high school and Wakefield Country Day School, where Freeman Allan teaches English and creative writing. The kids were asked: When you look in the mirror, what do you see?; What makes boys tick? (to girls); What makes girls tick? (to boys); What happens when, you die?; What do you think about war? About religion? About your parents?; Who are your heros?; What questions would you like to ask adults?

“I think this production will provide some amazing insights for people about where kids today are coming from,” noted Allan.
