State Police say 897 people were killed on Virginia highways during 1983, 16 more than the previous year.
In Rappahannock three people were killed in 1983, two of them in December. One death occurred in 1982.
Rappahannock's single victim in 1982 was an eight year old child, Patricia Ann Brown of Sperryville. She died when the car she was riding in was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer on Route 522 at Woodville in June, 1982.
Jean Tucker Edyvane of Washington died in a headon collision with a tractor trailer truck on June 8, 1983. She was traveling on Route 522 just south of Flint Hill.
Two traffic deaths on Route 211 at year-end tripled the county’s toll for 1983. An 81-year-old Maryland man, Paul A. Cross of Takoma Park, died in Sperryville near Parkway, on December 21 in a single car accident and 16year-old David Brian Scoville of Columbia, South Carolina was killed in a two car collision at Rediviva Bridge at the intersection of Routes 211 and 622 on December 28.
Police say statewide statistics could still rise somewhat because deaths which occur within 30 days of a crash are recorded in the month the accident took
