Clear Expectations
Students must know exactly what’s expected of them, Cogar says; And so the handbook is clear and complete. Cursing or defying any staff member results in an automatic and immediate referral to the assistant principal. Likewise fighting. Use of tobacco is not allowed anywhere in the building or on school property.
To keep parents up to date on the progress of their children, the school sends out “letters of concern” in February and April. These letters notify students of any serious lack of progress or possibility of retention at the end of the year.
Parents are held responsible for chronic truancy. Cogar says cases are referred to the school board for court action. Parents may be sued for neglect, Cogar said, adding that there is no doubt in his mind that a .parent who would deprive ,his child from attending one of the nation’s model schools is clearly neglectful.
