whether an author is using nouns effectively. And just what he means by the particular nouns he chooses.
A student doesn’t move on to evaluation before he has mastered application. He doesn’t pass until he has mastered application. And Cogar believes that each child will pass. “We believe every child can learn,” he says. “We set high expectations and will not settle for less.” A child has no option to say “can’t” at Prospect Heights. And in the past seven years, the school’s average SRA scores have doubled, Cogar says.
Structured Curriculum
The curriculum is what the commission on excellence would call well-structured. The commission stresses computer sciences. Prospect Heights has 12 computers in the computer lab and one in the library. Each 8th grade student spends one semester under the guidance of computer lab teacher Sheryl Haney. (The other semester is spent in careers.) Then’s another computer in the elementary school for the rest of the 6th grade. The system also offers adult classes in computers.
The commission placed importance on foreign language. Prospect Heights teaches four languages in 7th and 8th grades. The “exploratory” course offers nine weeks each of Latin, French, Spanish and German.
