Power Outages

Winter storms frequently result in scattered and sometimes area wide power outages. Homeowners can borrow a motto from the Scouts and be prepared. Be sure to have a stock of large candles, matches, battery-operated flashlights, a wind-up clock and a battery radio and keep the telephone number of the electric company handy. It’s also a good idea to have a supply of water jugs and to even fill up the bathtub and buckets if the wind or accumulated ice threatens to snap power lines. Remember, without electricity for the electric pump, nothing will be flowing out of the faucet.

In addition, it’s wise to keep a few can*- of food that can be warmed on the wood stove or a camp stove in case of an emergency.

If the power goes out, be sure to turn off all electrical appliances, such as irons and toasters, as a safety precaution. And turn off all major appliances, such as heat pumps and electric water heaters, to avoid power drain while the utility company is attempting to restore electricity.
