Last Saturday in Culpeper, the grocery stores were packed. Customers waited 10, 15 minutes for a shopping cart and then waited another 45 minutes to get through the check-out line.
The crowds were enough to bring frowns and mutters of irritation. But the people in those crowds, that was another matter.
In almost every line, there was an elderly man or woman driven into town to replace depleted food stocks by a considerate friend or a neighbor or a relative.
There is no other time of year when this awareness of the needs of others, especially the elderly, is more critical. We all should remember that and take the time to check on our older neighbors.
