This group meets after school once a week in the fall. Topics for discussion include: “how things are going”, classroom control, motivation and teaching techniques, simulated parent/teacher conferences, testing and evaluation methods and simulated conversations between teachers and “students.”
Carnegie Foundation grants are intended to improve teaching at the high school level. The Foundation's study suggests 12 priority areas, of which Rappahannock officials have ranked “instruction” in first place. Under that category, the study recommends use of a variety of teaching styles, high standards and fair evaluation, expanded use of primary source materials in addition to books and more teacher control over books and teaching materials selected for their subject areas.
The grant application was tiled by Estabrook and Chappell on January 10.
Teacher Training Fund
Rappahannock County Education Association president Scarlett Dyer had asked to address the board regarding another aspect of in-service training — the depletion of the budgeted fund to reimburse teachers for additional courses taken for recertification and additional training in their subject areas. This fund was to cover the cost of the computer course being offered to Rappahannock teachers and now the participants were told that they would tte responsible for 2/3 of the cost and that the school would reimburse each teacher $40 of the $134.50 that the course • would cost.
Dyer said only half of the j registrants stayed in the ' class when faced with this financial set-back, but that at least 40 had wanted to take it. With the recent emphasis on computer literacy, teachers at both the elementary and high schools need expertise in computer science, she said. Dyer pointed out that computer are planned to be added to the elementary school and that the teachers there don’t have computer training.
