People who are elderly or ill require more heat. If you’re comfortable at 68 degrees, set it there. If you’re comfortable at 72 degrees, set it there.

“The important thing is to leave it there. You save more fuel that way,” McWhinney continued. “If you turn a furnace down at night, you’re going to use all that more energy to bring the temperature in the house back up to normal in the morning.”

People must remember that a furnace is a piece of machinery ju$t like an automobile, McWhinney said. “Things will break down occasionally. Preventive maintenance is the key, especially for an older model.”

According to the heating system expert, fuel oil has not been as well refined in the past few years as it once was. “So oil line filters need to be changed once a year to make sure no water or other contaminants reach the burner and shut it down.”

Generally, it takes a trained service man to do that job and to check and clean the furnace motors once a year, McWhinney said.
