Member Paul Nichols wondered whether drivers might be starting out before closings were broadcast and then might need to returta students home. Estabrook answered that the earliest pick-up starts at approximately 7:15 a.m., but added tht drivers soon hear from students or parents when closings are broadcast.
Rappahannock schools contact 13 stations, Esttfbrook said. Three of theifc are not on the air at 6 a.rtt. when the decision must be made.
WINC in Winchester and WFLS in Fredericksburg give closing information often in the morning, Reeve noted.
Massie added that cancellations are recorded on the WCVA weather line in Culpeper (825-1490). She pointed out that mountainous terrain in the county interferes with many citizens’ ability to pick up more than one radio station. Hence the need for school officials to contact so many.
“If particular stations are not responding with haste, we’d like to know,” added Campbell. “Maybe we can call those (and work something out.)”
The next 30 day forecast was not much better than the previous two weeks, said Massie. So more of the same could be expected.
At the suggestion of Reeve, school officials will - look into the possibility of placing recording equipment on the school telephones that would issue a brief statement on days classes had been cancelled.
