Consumer education is needed on proper operation of heat pumps, electrical heating systems that are becoming more and more popular, according to McWhinney.
He advised homeowners who have heat pumps and those with all other types of heating systems take advantage of the free information available from the Virginia Office of Energy and Management Services by writing that department at 310 Turner Road, Richmond, Virginia 23225. “When consumers are educated, they feel better about whatever type of heating system they’re using,” McWhinney concluded.
Frozen Pipes
To protect outside pipes, plumber Erwin Lesh advises wrapping the pipes first with heat tape and then insulating them. “But the main thing is to seal the cracks around the foundation of the house,” he added. “Go down in the basement or under the house in the daytime, turn out the light and see where the day light shines through. Then cauk those cracks or stuff them with fiberglass insulation,” Lesh said, noting that foundation vents should also be closed.
“If there’s a pump house, that should be insulated too. And put in a heat lamp with a guard,” Lesh said.
