courses are offered besides the “basics.”

In addition, a specially trained teacher supervises a program for students who have been identified as needing an absence of stress, Cogar says.

Parents’ Help

“Conflicts about homework have a negative effect on students and parental attitudes toward school,” is how a handbook for parents summarizes the “homework hassle.”

This eight page pamphlet was prepared to teach parents how to supervise homework.

Parents are notified in advance that teachers will assign 30 minutes of homework per night for each 6th grader, 60 minutes for each 7th grader an 90 minutes for each 8th grader. The entire household must be committed to a regular study schedule, says the brochure. During this quiet time there should be no television, no radio, no stereo and no friends visiting. If students say they have finished their assignments before the study time has elapsed, they should be made to spend the remaining quiet time doing extra reading. Parents should then spend 5-10 minutes checking the homework. “An internal reward system is developed in the student through the pride and concern parents show in their child’s school work,” the pamphlet concludes.
