December visits to Shenandoah National Park did not offset a year long trend towards declining numbers of sightseers- Park officials say fewer people visited the park last month than did in December of 1982. There were 23,600 combined visits made at the various entrance stations compared to 28,300 during December, 1982.
With the final statistics gathered, the total decrease in visits during 1983 was .49 percent, 16.6 percent in December.
The total visits during the 1983 calendar year came to 1,838,900. In 1982 there were 1,848,100. Overnight stays were down also. In 1983 there were 422,144 (4,642 in December) compared to 443,376 in 1982 (4,585 in December).
