training, fire hose training, fire stream training, training in climbing and repelling are all vital ingredients of the firefighting experience. Each fire department in Rappahannock County is very limited, having only a few members who are highly skilled in these areas. With the addition of a training tower at Amissville, we will be able to enhance the skills of our fire and rescue personnel.
Emergency service volunteers want to build a fourstory training tower and the public reaction seems to be that we are introducing a form of high-rise or a new type of construction in Rappahannock County. This is incorrect.
When we speak of a story, we are talking about 10 feet in height. Many, many homes built here are of colonial, Victorian or cathedral type construction. It is not at all unusual in these styles for the height of a story to be anywhere from 14 to 18 feet. Therefore, a three-story colonial home could be taller than the fourstory training tower the Fire and Rescue Association wants to build.
