conscious of Yorks unique and important qualities, they successfully lobbied to have York included in the new national scheme.

York was settled by the Romans in 71 A.D. In those days, ships could come up to the confluence of the Ouse and the Foes rivers, a natural inland port. Many substantial remains from the 900 years of Roman occupations are here to occasion wonder. Subsequently, the Vikings conquered and settled in York. Important archeological finds of these years have been discovered and preserved in a "living” museum soon to be opened.

In the yean prior to the Norman conquest of England in 1066, Saxons lived and prospered hen. It was from the battle of Stanford against Norwegian invaders just north of York that Harold of England rushed south to Hastings to oppose William the Conqueror—to his death. William later nvaged York but then decided to make it an important royal seat.

Today York is the only English dty whose walls an standing around it—for 2V4 miles. After 1200, the largest medieval building in England, the minster, or cathedral, was constructed. It stands still, containing some of England’s most precious stained glass windows.
