not because the situation in York is as complex as any I’ve encountered. One hesitates to discuss it at all since only seeing is believing. A value of learning about the accomplishments of the intelligent and dedicated people here is to understand that when difficult civic and cultural questions are at issue, imagination and determination can result in monumental accomplishments.

One of our teachers and our mentor, John Shannon, a native, an attorney and a volunteer in the pursuit of York’s integrity into the future, said once in passing that a characteristic of Yorkshiremen (I hope and trust not women, too) is to delay or defer action—a sort of stubborn resistance to change. But this trait has been submerged and transformed in recent decades and passing needs have been met—to the benefit of all— in York, in England and in the world, for those fortunate enough to come here. York is a sparkling gem.

At home I am aware of the transgressions of people against people throughout the world—fighting, starving and destroying. Here we have been treated to the joys and stimulation of construction. My spirits are lifted. I feel I’m floating like a kite, high above the towers and spires of York.
