tern in Rappahannock. RSVP volunteers are age 60 and older. There are also 11 younger comirihnity services volunteers in the county. Together they have spent more than 3,100 hours helping others in the county since July, according to Szabad.
RSVP and community service volunteers perform a variety of functions. Some of them are “friendly visitors” who telephone or stop by to see the homebound. Others are drivers who take their neighbors shopping or to meetings onto medical appointments. Some serve meals at the nutrition site. Some show films in nursing homes. They: assist those who need help cutting through the red tape of governmental programs.
And they don’t only work with the elderly. They tutor school children, too. In the words of a RappahannockRapid an Conun unity Services brochure, they are everywhere “sharing the art of having fun, bringing history and geography to life for school children, offering their experiences and knowledge, hblding lonely hands, smiling, responding, raising spirits, caring, loving, giving, giving, giving...”
This is also what Jeanie McNear does best the rest of the time. She helps her husband Richard- run Greenwood Farm at Gid Brown Hollow and so says she sometimes has to fit her schedule around calvings and veterinarian visits.
