According to the architect, the construction can be completed in two phases with the gym built first to provide space while the remodeling is going on.
“It’s a concern,” assistant superintendent Tom Campbell acknowledged, referring to the perception that the expansion program puts athletics before academics. “But it makes more sense to build the gym first,” he added,
Massie noted that in the current gym, there’s only 30 inches between the basketball backboards and the wall; the new gym will provide eight feet. “We do have mats on the walls now but it stiU isn’t enough. We worry about the children running at great speeds and hitting those mats,” she said, stressing safety hazards the current lack of space presents.
In addition to improved features for student safety, the new gym will allow for better educational programs by providing space for two basketball courts for use in physical education classes, according to Estabrook.
That additional space “will enhance community use, too,” added RCHS principal Robert Chappell.
