In the dun past, which is to say about six months ago, two highly plausible candidates were considering the race. They were Alexandria attorney William Thomas, a Robb confidant, and Senate Majority Leader Hunter Andrews of Hampton. Both, however, bowed out. More accurately, they never bowed in.
As recently as last week there were two potential nominees; one a declared candidate and the other apparently about to declare. These were former Del. Edythe Harrison of Norfolk, who has announced, and Dr. Joseph Fisher, the state secretary of Human Resources, who had made no secret of his interest in the race.
Both were regarded too liberal (by Virginia standards) to be ideal candidates, but Fisher was considered by party leaders to be the more acceptable of the two. Just when the Democratic chieftains, with a notable lack of enthusiasm, were about to rally behind Fisher in order to stop Harrison, last week he pulled out of the race.
