Jim Roberts, Virginia Tech Extension entomologist, recently shared with me an idea for eliminating slugs. He suggested a homemade slug bait recipe of combining one pound of brown sugar, one 15-ounce can of beer and one teaspoon of Sevin. The mixture should be well stirred and applied to the bottom of a board, brick or a bucket lid.
Another pest that can be reduced to tolerable levels by trapping is the white fly. White flies are attracted to the color yellow (Rustoleum 659 seems to be their favorite). A board painted yellow and coated with oil or grease makes s sticky trap for adult white flies.
Unfortunately, the eggs and young will still be on the plants. This method seems to be most effective indoors and only with small populations of pests.
Another approach to pest control, which might be considered the reverse of trapping, is making shields or guards to prevent attack. This is most common to prevent wildlife damage.
Bulbs may be planted in wire mesh baskets to reduce mouse damage. The bases of orchard trees are often covered with wire or plant guards to reduce rabbit and mouse damage on the bark. Various nets over strawberries and blueberries save them from the birds. Nets also can be used over young seedlings to help prevent insect and rabbit damage.
Cardboard tubes or cans with both ends removed can keep cut worms from plant stems. Some gardeners even
