Te«cher Salaries

The largest chunk of the proposed school budget, $1,455,517, falls under the instructional category which includes teachers’ salaries. The total for teachers’ salaries shows a 7.5 percent increase over the previous year, an increase deserved and earned by the teachers.

Last year, teachers in Rappahannock received starting salaries that ranked 90th out of 135 school divisions and maximum salaries that ranked 117th. In both categories, local teachers fell below their peers in most nearby jurisdictions.

In order to retain and attract good teachers, the county must at least maintain its relative standing, if not improve what it offers in teacher compensation compared to other localities.

In addition, state employees will get pay raised of 9.6 percent next year. It’s only fair that salaries given teachers keep pace. After all, teachers must not only earn professional certification to get their jobs, they must periodically update that certification to keep their jobs, a requirement that does not apply to most other public employees.
